In Austria’s grand capital city Vienna (Wien) you can hire a van at Vienna International Airport (VIE) or from locations across the city. Vienna is a city that proudly displays its rich history, with a wealth of grand historic buildings and squares, whilst at the same time being a lively vibrant modern city with a thriving coffee culture. The Hofburg Imperial Palace, once home to the Habsburg Dynasty and now home to the President of Austria is well worth a visit, as are the Kunsthistorisches Museum, which houses the Habsburg’s art collection, the gothic Cathedral of St Stephens, the Schönbrunn Palace and the Schlosspark gardens.

Visit during the summer months to catch the Salzburg Festival, a celebration of arts and culture that takes place across the city each year.

Just a one hour drive from Salzburg lies Hallstatt, a village in the Upper Austria region of Salzkammergut. This popular destination overlooks the beautiful Hallstatt Lake and is home to fascinating 250-year-old Salt Mines and close to the Ice Caves of Dachstein, where you will discover ice waterfalls, lakes and ponds streaming through the limestone. You can fly to Graz Airport (GRZ), arrive by train at Graz Hauptbahnhof or drive the 127 miles from Vienna. As with most Austrian cities, there is a wonderful historic old town to explore, and Schlossburg, the castle that sits on a hill in the centre of the city is a great spot walking and taking in the amazing views.

In the west of Austria, you can pick up your van rental in Innsbruck, the capital of Tyrol and a gateway to the Alps. Surrounded by mountains, there are several ski resorts close by, and this is a region particularly popular with snowboarders. The city itself displays a fantastic combination of medieval and modern architecture and is a great place to spend a few days. About a one hour drive from Innsbruck will bring you to the glamorous ski resorts of Arlberg, nearby St Anton and the Brenner Pass, one of the main Alpine mountain passes that takes you through the spectacular Alpine scenery into neighbouring Italy. If you are feeling adventurous, enjoy a drive along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, which takes you into the Hohe Tauern National Park and to the foot of Austria’s tallest mountain, the Grossglockner.
