Enjoy a taste of Portugal’s regal past in the medieval town of Obidos, a stunning walled town full of white washed houses, arcades and picturesque squares, or drive further north to Alcobaca, a town known for its Abbey of Santa Maria, Portugal’s largest church and one of its greatest architectural monuments. Close by are the extensive Roman ruins of Conimbriga that date back to the 9th Century.

The city of Porto (Oporto) is Portugal’s second largest city, built on the hills of the Douro River Estuary in northern Portugal. Porto is a fascinating city that is best explored on foot, and across the river is the famous Port Wine producing district of Gaia. This city is exceptionally hilly, with many of its buildings built into the cliff faces and public stairways cut into the stone, so make sure you come prepared. Collect your van on arrival at Porto Airport (OPO), just 15km from the city centre, and drive north to the Minho region, a beautiful area full of vineyards, beaches and the Peneda-Geres national park. To the east is the quiet region of Trás-os-Montes, one of the more remote areas of Portugal. This is the region where you will find traditional markets, festivals and a feeling that life has changed little in the past few hundred years.

On Portugal’s south coast lies the Algarve, a popular tourist destination for those seeking sandy beaches, large hotels, water sports and golf courses.
