Mexico’s vast coastlines include the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. In northern Mexico is the peninsula of Baja California, where you will find some of the country’s most dramatic coastal landscapes. Begin your tour of Mexico here, driving across the border from San Diego in the US or flying directly into Los Cabos International Airport (SJD), close to the resort of Los Cabos at the southern end of the peninsula, or Tijuana-General Abelardo L. Rodríguez International Airport (TIJ), located 6km from the city of Tijuana, where you can collect your SUV on arrival. A highlight of Baja is the annual grey whale migration, visible between December to April, as well as the areas famous cave-art and the wonderful beach towns of Bahia Concepcion, Loreto and La Paz.

Northern Mexico, across to the east, is largely barren desert, though there are fascinating archaeological remains to be found, including the significant ancient ruins of Paquime. The cities of Durango and Chihuahua are also worth visiting, with grand colonial architecture mixing with contemporary culture, whilst Monterrey is a city that attracts a young, cosmopolitan crowd. Travel further south into the historic silver-mining region known as The Bajio, where you will find much architectural evidence of the Spanish rule, and is an area that was crucial in the push for independence from Spain, particularly in the towns Dolores Hidalgo and Queretaro. Visit the sophisticated cities of Zacatecas and San Luis Potosi, as well as the wealthy town of Guanajuato, whose fine buildings and museums are the result of riches gained from the silver industry.

From The Bajio, you can drive your SUV into Central Mexico and the capital, Mexico City, located within Mexico State. Spend time in Mexico City, a colourful and entertaining city that is both edgy and enticing. Also known as D.F (Distrito Federal), it is a huge city that is divided into boroughs that include the Centro Historico, the entertainment district of Zona Rosa and upmarket Polanco. Explore the palaces and cathedrals of Downtown Mexico City, visit the National Museum of Anthropology or relax in Chapultepec Park, a 6km park in the centre of the city and home to many of Mexico City’s visitor attractions. If you are flying into Mexico City, you can pick up your vehicle at Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX) and explore Central Mexico at your leisure, including the cities of Puebla and Taxco, both with fine examples of colonial architecture.

The southern Pacific Coast is the place to head to for tropical beach resorts, with the famous Acapulco being the largest and most popular of them all, whilst on the Yucatan Peninsula, in the south east of Mexico, you will find fascinating Mayan temples in an area that is at the heart of the Mayan culture, as well as the Caribbean coast resorts of Cancun and Chetumal.
