The United Arab Emirates is a group of seven emirates located at the entry to the Persian Gulf on the eastern side of the Arabian Peninsula. This is a fascinating Middle Eastern country to visit, and thanks to its oil wealth, visitors will find a very modern and advanced country that appeals to many western tourists. The UAE is one of the fastest-growing tourist destinations, as well as being a centre for business, with many international firms based in the region. Dubai International Airport (DXB) is the common place of entry for visitors and is a hub for Emirates Airways, whilst flights from Etihad Airways arrive at Abu Dhabi Airport (AUH) and the low-cost Air Arabia operates from Sharjah International Airport (SHJ). It is possible to drive into the UAE from Saudi Arabia to the south and Oman to the East, though most visitors will collect their estate car rental on arrival at their chosen UAE Airport and begin their Middle Eastern adventure from the comfort of their rental vehicle. Driving in the UAE is fairly straightforward; road signs are in Arabic and English, the road system is modern and petrol is relatively cheap, but be aware that renting a car or driving in the UAE requires an international driver's license, easily obtainable in your home country. The UAE is a very dry country, and its all year round sunshine makes it a popular vacation destination for Europeans escaping the cold of winter. Visiting between October and mid-March you will find the temperature to average a warm 29°C during the daytime, but this is considerably more pleasant than the summer temperatures of up to 50°C.

Take time to explore the highlights of the Arab Emirates, including the world’s largest sand dunes in the Liwa Oasis, hire a 4x4 to take a desert safari through the wadi’s of the northern region and visit the rock formations and archaeological sites of the Hajar Mountains. The beaches of the eastern coastline are wonderful and certainly one of the main attractions for many tourists, with long stretches of white sand and clear, warm waters, whilst the island of Sir Bani Yas, 9km from Jebel Dhanna, is considered to be one of the worlds best tourist resorts. Activities such as diving and snorkelling are hugely popular with visitors to the Emirates, as is skiing, which is possible at Ski Dubai, the world’s third largest indoor ski slope in the Dubai Emirates Mall. The UAE is also home to many major exhibitions and sporting events, with horse racing, tennis and Formula 1 attracting many visitors annually.
