Discover the Natural Wonders of Norway

The northernmost of the Scandinavian countries, Norway is a place of unbelievable natural beauty, as you will discover when you drive one of our automatic car rentals through its vast wilderness. This is a large and expensive country to travel around, so enjoy the freedom to travel off the beaten track and save money with your own rental vehicle. From deep fjords to vast glaciers, dramatic mountains and rocky coastlines, Norway is a real treat for anyone lucky enough to visit.

In East Norway is the sophisticated capital city Oslo, which is a great base for travelling out into the mountains and the fjords, as well as a city worth spending time in, with museums, a thriving café bar culture and fantastic nightlife. Getting out of the city is easy when driving your automatic car rental, and you will soon find yourself in the Norwegian countryside, with activities such as hiking, skiing, kayaking, cycling and sailing all on offer.

Travel west towards the city of Bergen in West Norway, the second largest city and a gateway to the western fjords. Once the capital of Norway, Bergen has a vibrant alternative music scene, as well as being surrounded by mountains. If you are driving, the E16 from Oslo is the most direct route, passing through Laerdal and Flam, though there are more scenic routes that will take longer and may be prone to closure in poor weather conditions. Stay in the city or head out into the breathtaking landscape of the Norwegian fjords that stretch from Stavanger in the south right up to the Russian border. From Bergen, you can easily travel to the fjord towns of Gudvangen, Balestrand, Lofthus and Voss, as well as to the Naeroydalen valley.

A must do road-trip in Norway is the Atlanterhavsveien, or ‘The Atlantic Road’, which connects an archipelago of small islands just off Norway’s Midwestern coast, near the cities of Molde and Kristiansund. A series of spectacular bridges take travellers on a five-mile or so journey across the wilderness of the Atlantic Ocean. You should also take a trip to the Sognefjord, Norway’s deepest and longest fjord that stretches more than 200 km into the foot of the Jotunheimen Mountain, or to visit Jostedalsbreen, the largest glacier on mainland Europe. On the south coast, there are hundreds of islands that can be explored by boat, launching from the pretty coastal villages of Mandal and Arendal.

NorwayFrom Oslo, you can also travel north to the ancient city of Trondheim in central Norway, home to the second largest church in Northern Europe, the medieval Nidaros Cathedral, as well as a beautiful historic town centre. From Trondheim you can continue north, where the landscape becomes increasingly more dramatic and sparsely populated. Travel across the Arctic Circle to the port of Bodo and take a ferry to the Lofoten Islands, or continue north to the town of Narvik, and then to Tromso. This area of Northern Norway is the place to go for more great fjords, as well to experience the longest hours of sunlight in the summer and to discover more about Norway’s ancient Sami culture. You can fly directly into Tromso and collect your automatic car on arrival if you want to save time.

The main airport for arrivals in Norway is Oslo Airport, Gardermoen (OSL), although some airlines also use Sandefjord Airport, (TRF) 115 km to the south of Oslo. On the west coast you can fly into Stavanger Airport or Bergen Airport (BGO) as well as Trondheim Airport (TRD) in Middle Norway and Tromsø Airport (TOS) in Northern Norway. It is also possible to drive into Norway from the neighbouring countries of Finland, Sweden and Russia. Wherever you plan to travel in Norway, hiring a automatic car ensures you get to see the best of its landscapes, towns and cities and travel at a pace that is right for you.
